Asymmetry Global Macro

ASYMMETRY® Glossary

Asymmetry Global Macro

Asymmetry Global Macro is Shell Capital’s global macro investment approach, applying the ASYMMETRY® risk/reward framework to opportunities across global equity, fixed income, currency, and commodity markets. Rather than making large, symmetric directional bets on macro themes, the Asymmetry Global Macro approach seeks to position for identified macro trends with a risk structure where losses are defined and limited while potential gains are meaningful.

The Global Macro Opportunity Set

Global macro investing operates across all major asset classes and geographies. Opportunities arise from divergences in monetary policy between central banks, shifts in economic cycles across countries, dislocations in currency markets, commodity supply/demand imbalances, and geopolitical developments that create mispricing across asset classes. The universe of macro opportunities is vast — and the analytical challenge is identifying which opportunities offer the most compelling asymmetric risk/reward profiles.

The Asymmetry Framework Applied to Global Macro

Applying the Asymmetry framework to global macro means evaluating every macro opportunity through the lens of risk/reward: What is the defined risk if the thesis is wrong? What is the realistic potential gain if the thesis is right? How long is the expected holding period, and how much capital is appropriately allocated given the size of the opportunity and the certainty of conviction? This disciplined evaluation filters out macro themes that are intellectually compelling but structurally unfavorable from a risk/reward perspective.

Systematic Implementation

Asymmetry Global Macro positions are implemented systematically — with defined entry levels, predetermined stop-losses, and systematic profit-taking disciplines — rather than discretionarily, which would introduce the emotional overrides and cognitive biases that undermine consistent performance. The systematic framework ensures that the Asymmetry risk/reward discipline is preserved in execution as well as in concept.
